Common Garbage Disposal Problems
Recognize the symptoms and understand what may need attention.

Humming without turning
A jammed mechanism can hum while the motor is stalled. Turn it off promptly. Never put fingers into the grinding chamber.

Unit will not start
A tripped overload, disconnected plug or circuit problem may stop operation. Repeated resetting without finding the cause can damage the unit.

Leaks or slow drainage
Water can escape at the sink flange, dishwasher inlet, drain connection or housing. Slow drainage may be downstream of the appliance.
Disconnect power first
Turn the wall switch off and isolate the electrical supply before any permitted clearing. Use the manufacturer instructions for the exact model. Keep hands out of the chamber, and do not work on wiring or a hardwired unit.
Use only model-approved checks
Some units allow use of an external hex socket to free a jam after power isolation. Remove only visible objects with suitable tongs while the unit is de-energized. Stop if the mechanism stays stuck or a reset trips again.
Decide whether replacement is justified
A cracked housing, repeated motor failure or uneconomic parts can favor replacement. A loose external connection may be repairable. Ask whether the quote includes drain alignment, electrical connection by a qualified person where needed and a leak check.
When to Call a Professional
Seek assessment when symptoms persist, the source is uncertain or a safe owner check does not resolve the issue.
- Persistent or recurring: humming without turning
- Persistent or recurring: unit will not start
- Persistent or recurring: leaks or slow drainage
- Water reaching electrical equipment
- Work involving gas, concealed pipes or sewage
- A shutoff that will not operate safely
Keep clear of wet electrical areas and sewage. If you suspect a gas leak, leave without operating switches and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location. Never cap a water heater relief valve.
