Common Pipe Problems
Recognize the symptoms and understand what may need attention.

Leaking pipe joint
A fitting can leak from corrosion, movement, a failed seal or an incorrect connection. More tightening can damage the pipe or fitting.

Split supply pipe
A split pressurized pipe may continue releasing water until the supply is closed. Keep away from wet electrical areas and isolate water only when safe.

Damaged drain section
Drain leaks may appear only during fixture use. Stop using the affected fixture and note where the water emerges.
Control the leak safely
For a small drip in a safe location, protect belongings and collect water while arranging assessment. For an uncontrolled supply leak, close an accessible shutoff. Do not use a flame near wet walls, wiring or unknown materials.
Choose a material-specific repair
A provider may replace a fitting, cut out a failed section or reroute piping. Approved connections vary by material and application. Adhesive tape, putty or a clamp may limit a leak temporarily but should not be assumed to be a permanent pressure-rated repair.
Check the surrounding system
Ask whether nearby pipe shows the same deterioration and whether supports, pressure or incompatible metals contributed. After the repair, confirm that joints are tested and ask how damaged finishes will be dried and restored.
When to Call a Professional
Seek assessment when symptoms persist, the source is uncertain or a safe owner check does not resolve the issue.
- Persistent or recurring: leaking pipe joint
- Persistent or recurring: split supply pipe
- Persistent or recurring: damaged drain section
- Water reaching electrical equipment
- Work involving gas, concealed pipes or sewage
- A shutoff that will not operate safely
Keep clear of wet electrical areas and sewage. If you suspect a gas leak, leave without operating switches and contact the gas utility or emergency services from a safe location. Never cap a water heater relief valve.
